Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

Hey guys,

Today saw Man United defeat Liverpool 2-1 with a controversial winning goal from Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford. Having being at a wedding today, I was only able to watch the second half of the game (the wonders of Sky Go!).

Now first thing I'd like to say is that I am not complaining about Uniteds second goal, after all, it looked like the goal was going to be credited to Patrice Evra and there was surely no way the linesman or referee could have detected the touch from Vidic. On top of that, I believe that Liverpool were incredibly lucky to leave Mansfield with a victory last week after Luis Suarez 'handed' us the win.

From what I hear, Man United thoroughly deserved to be ahead at the break with a dominant 1st half display with Liverpool's 4-3-3 proving to be largely ineffectual. Robin Van Persie stroked home a Patrice Evra cross.

The second half saw Brendan Rodgers make a substitution with Lucas making way for Daniel Sturridge, thus the change of formation to 4-4-2. The first 15 mins showing a similar pattern to the 1st half with United leading the charge to the Liverpool defence and it paid off as Van Persie's free-kick found the head of Evra, which took a slight deflection of Vidic, was enough to beat Pepe Reina.

As soon as United took their 2-0 lead saw Liverpool's fight back. Gerrard's shot was parried by David De Gea into the path of Sturridge who slotted the ball into the net taking his tally to 2 in 2 for his new club. Liverpool pressed for an equaliser in the last 30 mins with United happy to contain with the substitutions of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling but were unable to create many clear cut chances. Sturridge had the best of the opportunities after a scramble in the box ended with the ball landing at his weaker right foot.

Overall, I (a Liverpool fan) felt that our second half performance may have merited a draw but did we do enough for that second goal? I don't think so. As most of our games go, we have the best of possession but don't always create as many chances as we should. That being said, Howard Webb could have easily shown a few reds today to Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson which seems to be a debate that happens in every encounter between the 2 sides.

Well done to the boys from Manchester. This season looks to be a write off as Man City and Chelsea do not look convincing at all as the task of hunting down United this year looks an impossible task.

But football is a funny game. With a lot of points to be won and lost, we can only wait to see if a Man United collapse is forthcoming.
